So I will be getting a 125 gallon tank(In the near future) and i want to do a south american tank,. SO far it will have severums and hoplo catfish. Will a group of say 6 silver dollars be okay in this size tank with these fish? I am looking at Metynnis hypsauchen specifically because I think these are the smallest and most widely available. I am getting conflicting information on them too. Some say 4in some say 8in? What size will these guys get usually? Hows thier temperment and behavior? Are they shy fish? Any further information would be great.

Forgot to mention they will start out in a 55 gallon and I will get them at arounf 2in.

They will be fine in a 125. 6 would be a good number they are a lot less timid in groups of 5 or 6 . They max out about 6 inches and are peaceful but spook easily. Once they get too adult size and are in the tank for awhile they will not be as timid. Incidently they will school with mascara barbs which are fearless and will give the dollars courage.

Finally a response thank you! And I have read they also like thier plant matter yes? Could I keep hardy plants like java fern and anubias with them or will it just get shredded?

hypsauchen will eventually shred any plant, including anubias!

Yes, the silverdollars will do fine in a 125. They will enjoy the space.
They will destory all the plants in the tank in a matter of minutes.
I have 2 very large metynnis hypsauchen at about 6-7''. They will get to be about the same size as Argentues. They are a nice fish.
