Are there any trigger fish that could live comfortably for life in a 55 gallon tank? I would keep him/her as a single fish. I'm new to saltwater and want to get everything straight before buying one. I have been looking at a picasso trigger. Would you guys recommend one to a beginner? I've had luck with damsels and procupine puffers before but never tried anything else. Thanks!

i would say no. you could look into filefish. they look similar to triggers but stay smaller

What size tank would I need to keep a single trigger in long term? Are there any triggers that stay under 12 inches? Would a 55 work as a growout for a year? I have a 135 that I will need as a growout for my cichlids for the next 8 months or so, I may just wait until I move them into the 300 gallon to get a trigger. So, Would my 135 be good for a single trigger? What types are good for beginners?

I have kept Picassos and the other Rhinecantus species for years in 200 odd litre tanks.. never had a problem nr felt that the fish were unduly confined.

Even clowns, at a younger age and Undulatus I kept in such tanks.

Thanks Miguel! So a picasso would do good in a 135 gallon for life then?

yes, imo.

yeah a 135 is fine for all but the largest of triggers (the titan and queen) but a 75 is typically considered by most to be the min for life. there are a few that stay about or less than a foot, the one that comes to mind the most is the Niger trigger, but there are others except their names escape me at this moment.

What would be a suitable tankmate for a picasso in a 135?

butterfly fish, angels, larger damsles, larger clowns, wrasses, puffers, hawkfish, hogfish, squirrel/soldierfish, eels, anthias

Would I be able to keep any of the species of lionfish?
