Im trying to find out more about
erythrinus erythrinus.

So far iv read that they are found in Peru, French Guiana, Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago and Brazil and depending on collection location colour and pattern may vary, and because of DNA testing they have classed them as a species complex. Iv read that the once from peru (witch they call E. erythrinus sp peru) has a bright orange belly and ones collected in Brazil are more yellow.

So to begin with i would like to clarify some thing about E. erythrinus sp peru

Do all E. erythrinus that come from peru look the same?

Do they have to have the bright orange belly to be classed as E. erythrinus sp peru? Or do they just have to come from peru?

I'll let someone more knowledgeable go into it scientifically.

They get mislabeled a lot then you have a kesslier that I'm not sure I've seen one in the hobby. Usually if it's labeled sp peru it's a lot lighter in color with orange around the bottom in the back. The ery ery (red) is darker and more colorful.

Aside from the look theyre behaviour is very similar from what I've seen.

Erythrinus erythrinus are found in Peru as well. Sp Peru is found only in Peru
As far a si know. A complex but not confirmed.

Ery ery from Peru should have the same colors as the one from Brazil. Maybe difference in color intensity but same pattern.

Sp Peru will have the orange body and be from Peru.

Thanks for the link it was a good read, i did read about Erythrinus kessleri not being in the hobby. i found this video claiming to be the Erythrinus kessleri but im not really an expert so i dont know.

Thanks for your reply. That interesting how the sp peru is only found in peru. I wonder whether the ones with orange pattern and the ones with yellow pattern come from different places. I have one with the yellow pattern but would love to get one with the orange pattern.

Hard to say if its a specific catch location but my old red was very bland in color. An interesting thought.

Keep in mind ery ery is the only described species. Ery sp peru and ery ery from Peru are different. As mentioned there's also kessleri and tahuayo. Also seen another one recently sp Paraguay.

I have one I believe to be kessleri. The fish seems more elongated or not as thick as a same size ery ery and sp peru would be. It's dorsal is shorter than the other two. Doesn't have any bright colors other than in the fins but I think it lost it around 6", have to take a close look to be certain. It's pattern depending on mood can be like sp peru except where peru is orange the kessleri is a light grey. Sometimes the light grey will break up and turn into stripes. Towards the tail end but never reaches to the top of the body.

Do you have any pictures of your Ery kessleri?

these are old pics of it 6" and under. It passed today at 7" with scales missing. I think due to the trachy. I've been noticing wide bite marks as if the trachy was trying to eat it from the bottom, the trachy is the only fish in the tank with such a wide mouth. But I suppose I can't be sure.

It certainly dose looks different then E sp peru. I like the orange colouration on the gill cover and the little black spots on the dorsal fin. Was it sold to to you as E kessleri

Sold as a red at lfs. They had two. It had some orange on the belly when it was smaller. I had a thread on it. It went away completely once larger though. Kept the sheens in the face.
