How aggressive are Frontosa's..... big dominant males? I have heard that they are not to bad in terms of aggression.

Also has anyone mixed them with anything different like American cichlids for example?

Not planning on doing this but just wanted to find out a little more about them?

From my experience with burundi frontosa, I would say they are relatively peaceful. Mine have done better in groups larger than five. When I had just two (females) together they would fight, not just fin nip, but MMA style! Conversely, as a group, with larger dominant males, a hierarchy is established and less dominant males/females seem to know their place in the aquarium. Fights have been limited to a quick chase by the dominant fish and a retreat by the lesser fish. That's it, no hunting your *** down and smashing, chewing, thrashing, and shredding of fish parts.

I found that using tons of drift wood, rather than pots or pipes worked best for me. I believe that the boundaries are less defined when wood is arranged in a woven maze; therefore, defense of territory is not as obvious/witnessed. Basically, no clear cut walls, spaces, or enclosures to claim. Yet, still providing a comfortable environment to rest and retreat. Hope this helps you my friend!

I wouldn't keep them with new world stuff. Aggression considerations aside, the water chemistry is very different. Tangs need harder water and high pH to thrive whereas new world fishes generally prefer soft water and low pH.

I'm sure others have probably done it before though.

Most folks simply keep them in groups, but a commonly recommended tank mate is Cyrtocara moori. They are a Malawi hap with similar size and temperament who will occupy more of the sand and the open water than the rocks.

i keep my single juvenile with clown loaches a blue acara and various other community fish. my tap water is hard with high ph so i dont feel bad! planning on getting a few more soon.

Bro, I am currently keeping frontosas - burundis, mimpbewes, zaire blues in seperated in their respective tanks for each variant. 5 x 2.5 x 2.5. However when I first started I mixed them all up with Malawis, South American Cichlids - Green Terror, Firemouth, Jewelfish, Rams, Bolivian Rams, Eartheaters, Flowerhorn in a 5 x 2 x 2 without much problems. The only challenge, they lose out during feeding time as they rather slow and miss out.

As for aggressiveness in a com tank I did not see it - this however became more appparent in a fronts only tank. However for me these were rather low key as it was not all out war. Provide lots of hiding places and it will resolve your problem. Cheers!

I have a 12" male (thanks Jeff) in with a 15" Dorado. The front is not aggressive but will not take any crap from the Dorado.
