I started an EBJD breeding program by purchasing 5 small fish at my LFS (at 11.00/piece and the beautiful colors it was a steal). I knew that these wouldn't be key players early on, but I was hoping to have them around to introduce as potential new males and females for my next generation. One thing I learned about having an extensive breeding program for any fish is that you always need to be aquaring and introducing better fish to improve your specific line. A breeder can degenerate their bloodline quickly and thoroughly with the introduction of poor fish.
I only had one tank and that was my CA/SA tank. I put in a breeder box and it worked fine, the little guys where in their box and couldn't get out. The process was working well for over two weeks, success.
This weekend I overfilled the tank to a level in the breeder box allowed for the fish to get out. while doing my morning feeding on Sunday, I noticed that members of my CA/SA had indeed been eating all night long.
Only two small pieces of the five EBJD's were left.
I was devasted. I just felt bad that such beautiful fish became a midnight snack. The $55.00 didn't hurt but not as bad as seeing the little critters become part of an elevated nitrate/nitrite level in my tank.
This weekend I am starting my new EBJD breeding program in earniest with the aquisition of some breeding size fish. I will be picking up about 4 to 5 larger fish this weekend from vaious local sources. I am very excited. I'll start a new thread to keep you posted.
Enjoy!
