my poor jack dempsy was attacked by my convict cechlids. by EBJD had his left fin ripped off down to the bone, a open wound on his dorsal fin and all his fins are down to the bone. it happed over the weekend while I was away. I set up an emergency tank, its small, 5 gallons, water treated, filtered, added medicine to help his wounds prevent fin rot and fed him. He has eaten, not a whole lot like his normal piggy self (I have had to pry pieces of decorative plants out of this fish's mouth on two occasions.)

He is now litterally face at the bottom of the tank and hanging out. He swims every once in a while, but for the most part he leans up against the tank wall, its like he is fighting to not go upside down. He is a very dark color, he usually is blue and dark blue, now he is almost all dark blue. He is 2 years old, lived in a 65 gallon tank with the other fish.

I don't want to give up hope.

Here are my questions.

Is the face down position an indication of him dying

If he lives will his fin grow back at all?

so there ya have it - thanks for trying to help.

Fins usually grow back.. I've seen lots of fish lose fins and the just regenerate after time. The color change would be expected.. And my Oscar always fights with my JD's and when he gets beat up he usually chills out at the bottom of the tank. I'd say just keep a close eye on him
