No matter how hard we try to safeguard our little freshwater inhabitants, something out of the ordinary always seems to happen.
Here in Mobile, AL, we have a severe problem with a little house invader--the brown salamander!
These little brown salamanders are somewhat attracted to my fish aquariums, and as a result, my fish like to utilize them as an opportunity for food when they attempt to climb into the tanks.
Well, one unlucky salamander got into my Flowerhorn's tank a week ago, and the FH jumped up into the lid to capture it. Well, the FH got his meal, as I saw the tiny tail hanging out of his mouth. The problem was he bashed his Kok against the lid in the process.
For a solid week, his head had this huge dent on the right side, but progressively bulged back into normal shape after about 5 days.
HOWEVER, his right eye started turning slightly cloudy on the outer edges during the 6th day, and within 2 hours was completely filled with fluid.
Now, his right eye is bulging way out of his head and is about 5 times the size of his left eye. He's irritating it worse by rubbing it against the substrate.
I have tried treating it with Melaleuca, but overnight his eye turned cloudy, and there's an aweful white ring around the eye base and the part where it attaches to his head.
It's almost as if his eye is being forced out by internal fluids draining from his head injury.
His left eye seems to be in perfect shape.
I'm very distraught over this, as anyone FH collector knows the value of a large and healthy GM, and I'm quite sure he's already gone blind in his left eye, and it appears that it may fall out at this point--possibly costing him his life in the process.
Anyone have advice dealing with these kind of injuries and whether or not the med I am using is going to work?
I did add salt of course, and I apologize for not posting a picture, but I do not want to stress my FH with a camera flash, or turning on the sick-bay light just to post a photo.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
