I just noticed the wound today. It is on his underside, just inside hist left gills and is about the size of a pea. The wound is open in the middle and raised from his body. He ate pretty well tonight so, it has not seemed to affect his appetite.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what it is? I am going with a defense wound from a female. There is nothing in the tank for him to injure himself on.

Let me know what you think.

I think your right on the wound from another ray
looks like whoever got him pretty good

Brent,

I am not sure what else it could be. He had been harassing both of them lately. I am assuming that one of them had enough and fought back.

I'll keep up on water changes and add some salt to see what happens.

Thanks,

Colin

he'll be fine compare that to the wounds from males bitting on females
it does look a little deep but he should be fine

i disagree

its on the underside of the ray

how can another ray injure another ray on its underside? its should be on top if its a bite wound, it looks more like an ulcer.

but rays free swim alot over each other, stack up etc.....
you right it could be right an ulcer but i have not seen many ulcers before on rays
also we are thinking the wound came from a stinger not a bite

Check the others rays barbs. It does like your male got stuck by the way its pulled out like that. As you most likely know whe rays sting something else the "sheath" of skin sourounding the barb would come off expopsing the bone.

i think it would look more horrid if it was a stinger no? :WHOA:

Looks pretty horrid to me:D

I also think that the ray got stung. Rays often stack on top of each other so its definately possible. I would check the other rays stinger if its gone or not.

Both of the females in the tank with him have the sheath missing on the back 1/3 of their spines.

He was digging for food this morning. He seems to be fine.
