a buddy sent me this pic..apparently he had pups last night and his male was injured while mating the female.he tells me when the male inhales, you can see water/movement coming from the hole!apparently its deep enough that it went past the inside of the sperical! i have no idea how to help him! anyone have any suggestions for him?

Is that a hole pierced by the female stinger. Not a whole lot to do except keep water clean and watch for infection. As long as nothing vital is pierced I think it will be fine. But you knew all this anyways. Is he eating and behaving normally otherwise? Hopefully the damage wasn't in vain.

thanks don..
yeah, it apparently is acting normal and breathing normally.i am worried for him since every time the male breathes, the hole is kept open.i dont see how it will heal that way! my only advise to him was that i was wishing him the best!sucks not to have a good constructive suggestion for him..

This is an injury I have seen many times.
Tell him just to keep the water pristine, the slit\hole will heal very quick, I had one worse than this on a Pearl male after mating, within a week it was almost invisible.....there was a huge gaping hole, closed up completely, can't see where it was now.
Looks much worse than it is....tell him not to worry, It will be fine.

Oh Wow Just An Ugly looking wound for sure Infection would be the the thing that would not do him well Good luck!!!!Good to hear Richard very good to hear!!!!!

thank you richard...i will pass it on! this is why i still come on mfk..some of the bull crap thats been posted lately is disgusting really makes this site lose its appeal.a good question and an honest answer is what mfk is all about .thanks again!

You could also add in some Melafix into your tank for him it's suppose to help with open wounds (follow the bottle instructions). Make sure you add in an airstone because it makes it harder for your fish to breath, other then that tell him to do just a few extra wc's for a week and keep the water extra pristine and it sounds like he will heal up fine.

Treat for 5 days then do a large wc to help remove it and put in a carbon filter to remove the medicine.

Had a similar incident when i was cleaning my tank and broke one of the glass lids and a piece of the glass slid all the way down straight to the ray. I added some salt but i'm not so sure that it helped. Not so sure about the melafix. I say do what the others suggested and just keep the water pristine. Tell your friend good luck and it is a very beautiful ray.

I have a friend that encountered the same situation. What he has done was catch him out and put tetracycline powder on the wound every day kinda like u cleaning your own cut.. And heard it healed miraculously! ;)
