I would like to switch to Inline heaters to remove the ugly pvc pipe from my 500.

I was thinking about getting two 300 watt heaters. I currently have one 500 watt and one 300 watt and my temps are 81-83 degrees. With the inline heaters, do they heat up the water faster since the area of water needed to heat is smaller than having a heater inside the tank? I'm trying too if possible use less watts if my thinking is correct. I will have one heater on each Marineland 360, one 360 is used for minor filtration but will be converted to an empty canister and connected to the heater and the other 360 is on the UV.

Thanks

Inline heaters generally need more watts per gallon, at least from what I've read, the 300watt hydor inlines are only good for 80gal whereas a jager can easily handle 150gal, also depends on your lowest ambient temp and if you get a sump filter your heaters can go in there and be out of sight.

If you are thinking of the Hydor I wouldn't bother. I have one and I think I would rather have a DIY inline-filter housing and a 300W glass heater.

I guess I will have to get creative then. I may look into a fake hollow log. I have some logs now but will have to piece two together because I need at least 18".

Place it under your substrate?

I use two Hydor 300 watt in-lines on my FX5 with some custom plumbing. This heats up my 210g and holds the temperature steady. You have to spend some hard core money if you want a good in-line heater to handle that 500g. The Hydor's are toys in comparison.

I hit up Petsmart tonight, got two logs and some fake plants. Then I placed the heaters inside each log, used braided line to keep the heater from sliding out, stuffed some plants in the holes the keep the nosey eel away, he cant fit inside anyways. Looks much better. Now I need to figure out a way to hide the inlet/outlet.
