i have a 600 gallon tank that i plan to build a filtration system for. i want to drill the bottom of the tank and use pvc ball valves to control flow during water changes. i was told to worry about the ball valves breaking under the pressure of the water in the tank. is this possible or likely? has anyone ever experienced this? if so, are there any valves that i can use with pvc which have an extremely low risk of breaking? being the hole will be drilled on the tank bottom, if anything happens i will lose my fish and suffer water damage.
im also trying to figure out how to make an inline heater for the tank. i have 5 300 watt submersible heaters which i would like to find a way to incorporate them into the tank without actually placing them in the actualy aquarium. maybe there is a large canister filter that has that option. with regards to filters i was thinking of using the oceanic series but any info on a better system would be appreciated. thank you for any help you can offer.

water heater... if you're going to use a wet/dry since it is a 600 gal tank.. put the heaters in the sump. now for the valve... i really don't get the point you're making.... are you saying putting a valve on the drain pipe going down? why? what for? try to find a way not to put a valve on the drain or you might end up drying up your wet/dry and sump and result to overflow...:(

i plan on using a canister filter instead of a wet dry to stop any risk of flooding if there is ever an issue with shortages or pump failure. i want to use the valve to shut off the water flow from the tank when doing water changes. it doesnt make sense to have a big pipe draining the tank without any means to shut it. with heating, because i want to use a canister filter my question arises on how to make them inline for it.

Heres a inline heater I made works well been in use for 2 years now. Its in line after my diy sealed canister filter.

Thats a sweet heater module you made. I like it.

I was gonna mention the Lifeguard heater module. Its like $35 bucks and can be connected to a canister or a return pump/ power head. But If you get that, you might aswell use their whole system. Its pretty nice and it can be built up to suit your needs.

Jawbone,
Id love to learn more about your DIY inline system. Do you have more pics or diagrams?

I'd be very intersted to know more about that. I would just put the heaters in the tank if you are using a canister, and put them in the sump if you use a w/d.
