hoping my baby peru O will mix well, but here's what I'm mulling over & debating amongst:

I like bold personality fish such as trimac (hi quality. female OK) and/or lyonsi. I love the striking yellow available &/red eyes of both.
How do female trimacs' owner-response compare with males, anywhere near as outgoing?
These will be the first I've owned, only seen & studied them.

Lyonsi, any chance a pair would work?

I want eye-popping fish, & also enjoyable with family.

Oh, and I know it's a different theme, but also love polleni or bleekeri- female fine.

PLZ, all experienced tips wanted! what may work?

THANKS!

Do you want a pair? Those amphilophus that you mentioned are beautiful in pairs but the males can be very rough on the females. If it was my tank I would get a group of whatever species you decide and see if a compatible pair forms. One cool thing about lyonsi is that they are endangered so if you breed them you can think of it as a mini conservation effort. If you like the bright colors festae also might be a nice option

I know a trimac males are very aggressive, so not thinking of a pair. just female.
I understand lyonsi are less aggressive amphs. not sure if a pair could coexist with my oscar?
festae are gorgeous, but I want input about of the above^ before weighing other species.
This will be my biggest tank ever. I don't like crowding stock.

How big is your Oscar and what size would you be getting the Trimac at?

I love fish from the amphilophus family. The Trimac are usually considered the higher aggression of the family while the Lyonsi the less aggressive. But each fish is different so you never know. I had a Midas that was one of the best community tank fish ever. Im currently raising a hoga in my new mix of fish.

It'll be over a month before I get the tank, & have to buy all equipment.
O is now about 5 inches now, & alone.
not sure what size female trimac(s) I'd get. depends on availability & all the etc's. prefer to get something already beginning to show quality, rather than buy a bunch of little ones, BUT.... ?
do females fight amongst themselves, without a male?

ps, same questions^ about stocking lyonsi.

what size community tank was midas in?

I considered citrinellus, but they all look the same, compared with trimacs & lyonsi :-/

I have 3 small 1.5" females in a tank with 1 male. They chase each other around (the females), so yes, in sense.

With your oscar being 5" already, he'll probably put on another 1.5" in a month, so you might be better off with Lyonsi. I believe you'll have less worries. It's more difficult to get a tank with Trimacs to work in harmony without much headache.

Hope this helps.

HMmm... sounds like even female trimacs are a handful :-)
What about towards other species, would one female be likely to harass an oscar? or mostly each other?

Started in a 120g 60"x18" footprint, moved to a 210g 72"x24" footprint. He was pretty mellow in the 120g but totally mellowed out in the 210g. He got along with any cichlid I ever put in with him but hated my red hook silver dollars. Dont know how of why but he would single one out in particular and give chase. This behavior stopped when he got into the 210g. He was always the biggest fish so maybe that is why he never had issue with anything else.

My current amp is a hoga that is only about 2" right now. Seems to have a very similar personality as my old Midas did. My Avatar pic is of the Midas.
