ok we all do know that FH's do get rather hostile to each other wile pairing and spawning...

how do you know far is far enough?

like when female is in corner fearing for her life?

beaten and tater d fins and scales missing, maybe broken or missing pieces of lips?

one more plz, just fishing for some answers.

ppl say they use mostly bare bottomed, decor-less tanks with a saucer. ok let me ask this, where do the females retreat to? or do you just put the divider up at that point? and if you do put up the divider again, does that really help or do they get worse when you take divider out again?

feel free to give opinions, past experiences, examples, pictures, whatever.

ok ty for your time.

The divider helps them get used to each other a little bit w/o actually being able to hurt each other. I would just put the divider up at that point. I have a 8-9" BD and a 5"RD in a 75 together. He chases her, but he never actually catches her and hurts her so I leave them together. I would separate them if they actually start to hurt each other though. Separate them too after the eggs have been fertilized...

Some FH's never take to each other this is why breeding them is challenging at times! Other times it can be easy. Most of the time there will be a bit of fighting but other none. You should allow the two to be next to each other divided for a while before you try to introduce them. Once you do, you will want to watch for at least an hour. Sometimes it take a bit for the fighting to get real bad if it is going to, and you could make a mistake and walk away to soon, come back and find you now have issues. You should not push it to the point of real damage though. If fighting is serious like you are explaining now, separate them. Try again later. If that doesn't work you will need to try a different pair up.

IMO you should separate any fish that fight to that extent.Don't let a death happen

another question that he asked, Once they lay eggs and their fertile, if you divide the parents from eachother, is it safe to re introduce them? or will the parents kill eachother.

My red devil male and midas male both tried to kill the female after the eggs hatched...

There are two techniques for that question and they both work fine just depends what you want to do and if you are willing to take a bit of a risk to determine if the parents can be trusted? Some fish will take good care and continue even after the fry hatch and are free swimming. Others normally the female does it but can eat the eggs in a panic move. Me personally, I like to gamble and determine if my fish can be trusted with the first batch, because if they can then I like to allow the opportunity for them to tend to the fry for a few weeks. If they can not be trusted and one eats the eggs. Than the second time I pull them both once the eggs turn black. If you do this note you must have a current or air strip, something to make a light steady current that simulates the mother fanning, so the eggs do not mold.

this absolutely answers nothing... and u know what it really doesn't appear to be entirely violent. large fish fighting and courting appears more violent then it actually is to them. but on another note, i've had males kill females with one nice blow to the side. like in a blink of a eye.
