For those with long haired dogs, could you please share how often yours are bathed and what dog shampoo was used? Are dog soaps also good enough? What do you think of the Petgard brand?

I would prefer that insights be based on experience. Liz (Red Devil), I'd love to hear about your collie's grooming schedule.

Hope to get your insights, folks. Thanks!

What breed of dog are you inquiring on? I have a miniature schnauzer and I groom her myself. Bath schedule is once a week with an all natural shampoo making sure to rinse all shampoo out completely to avoid skin irritation. She is brushed out weekly and groomed monthly. Hope this helps.

Cocker spaniel. A little over three months old and regularly brushed to remove her loose hair.

Thanks for the input btw, JtSchertz. I've been into short haired dogs too long so just gathering inputs how much different long haired ones are brushed, etc.

No problem...most important thing I can tell you about cocker spaniels is making sure there ears are cleaned properly and hair remove, they are very prone to ear infections. That was the most common ailment we treated on them at the vet clinic I use to work at. Good luck and enjoy your new pup!!

Yep. Noted that and cleaning the ears regularly along with tear stains around the eyes. It's like raising a daughter.lmao

When I had shi-tzu and yorkie, I bathed them every weekend, and brushed them daily. I just used the dog shampoo bought from local Walmart store (don't remember the name or brand, but I know it when I see it)

i rarely have bathed my collie... only brushed him... he is not an outside dog.. they need a ritual of brushing... even if it is only 5 minutes with a good brush.. going the proper way.. only brush in the direction of the hair.. this is done every evening no matter what.. keeps him looking consistently beautiful.. and don't forget to brush your dogs teeth as well.. my collie will hop two legs up on the chair and let me brush his teeth.. it helps that i buy dr foster and smith toothpaste..tastes like chicken... he loves it.. so doing this when their young avoids all those expensive dental cleanings later...

I worked in two different dog grooming shops in the past. Both used regular palmolive dishwashing detergent to wash all of the dogs (without allergies). Both owners said the detergent has is effective at cleaning, and has good conditioners that do not dry out the skin. The second shop followed the palmolive with specialized shampoos based on need (snowy coat for white fur, oatmeal for sensative skin, etc.).
