Is it at all possible to keep male bettas together? Say I had a 75g so they had plenty of room to avoid each other and lost of plants/wood to break up line of sight. Is there a limit to their territory or is just a kill on sight instinct?
IME....i did that with 5 betta's in a 55gal with cory's, black phantom tetras, tigers barbs, and clown louches. 1 betta lived. But you can try it if you like.
it will not work, as soon as they are able they will fight. if they are not fighting then they are already on there way to floaters. healthy males will kill each other. i heard of a person doing a science project on the effect of estragen on male bettas. with calming results! i have always wanted to try it, but never got too it. bettas dont do well with other fish like barbs/tetras also im acctually suprised 1 lived in Haynchinook post
awww that sucks. I really wanted to see if I could hold a record for worlds largest betta tank or something but would hate to do it with just one. Thanks for the input I figured somebody here had to have tried something similar.
Thalan, it may or may not work. One thing to consider however is that male bettas love to establish their territories. In a heavily planted tank, the chances of them attempting to beat each other up is much more minimal than an open area where they are exposed constantly to each other's presence.
If you had tons of hornwort or other surface plant breaking up the surface, and lots of tall plants that almost reached the surface, i think it could work... The key is for them to see each other as little as possible.
