I have a 10 gal tank that contains native (iowa) inverts including planaria, leeches (no idea on the species), water boatmans, insect nymphs (don't know the species), common ramshorn and trapdoor snails, diving beetles and many smaller inverts. Also have flathead minnows and ghost shrimp. I was wondering if anyone has experience with insects planaria and leeches. I have had the leeches for 4 months and am amazed they are still alive. i know boatmans and diving beetles usually mate in flight but can they mate on top of the tank?

Thanks, I will try and get a pic tonight. But it hard to get a good pic since most things relatively small (except for the shrimp and trap door snails) and the leeches shy.

If you took some pictures of the insect larvae I could probably help you ID them, I have done some research with aquatic macroinvertebrates in the past.

Sounds like a pretty neat set-up, I've been doing something similar for quite a few years in my bog tank. If you can up load you pictures to a hosting site, like photobucket (free), then you can usually just copy and past into the thread.

Cool i what do you have in your tank? Any idea on what this is?

That looks to be a caddisfly nymph of some type, either that or a diptera (true fly). hard to say for sure from the picture. The bog tank has fish, stonefly nymphs, caddisfly nymphs, mayfly nymphs, dragonfly nymphs, damselfly nymphs, water striders, scuds, planaria, segmented worms, and assorted plants. Its had a snapping turtle and beetles in the past. Tomorrow when I get back around some high speed internet, I'll post up some full tank shots for you.
