Hey guys,

the FBF fluidized bed filter looks like a great inexpensive way to add more bio filtration (over the standard scrubbies in my W/D).

I am just a little unclear on how you plumb it. Some places it says you need to plumb after some mechanical filtration and others it shows running a powerhead to the FBF and then just a hose back to the tank.

Which is it?

If you can run a FBF before mechanical filtration, could you plumb it inline before your w/d drip plate? Would a 1" overflow be too much? I have dual 1" overflows and could put 2 smallish FBF's, one on each line and have them flow into the drip plate of the W/D.

Or do I need to buy another pump and have it suck water from the sump of the w/d after the bioballs and have it pump from the sump to the FBF and back into the sump before its pumped back into the tank?

There are all sorts of DIY's for FBFs butnone erally explaining exact pluimbing.

Thanks!

d'oh some more free time googling and I found my answers.

FBF must be prefiltered and powered.

i run my fsb in my sump.

the pumps runs after the mechanical filtration of the foam and bio balls, then it returns back to the sump with the flow pointing towards the tank return pumps. it also gives my a little water movement it my sump water and stops dead bacteria building up and the bottom of my sump.
