ok I am looking for step by step directions on how to make a freshwater sump for my 180 tank, I looked up here but did not find any. Does anybody know any links or could point me in the right direction

The DIY filters sticky is at the top of the DIY filters section...

I would stick with canisters on a FW tank. I would do a Fluval FX5 or a small pond filter that has a backwash option. Canisters are much more effective at mechanical filtration.

I wouldn't agree. It is hard to not have more than enough biomedia in a large canister (especially something like the FX5). I have never heard of anyone with a large canister not being able to cycle the tank. The bacteria in a sump may run a little more efficiently, but it is also more maintenance to keep the old school bioballs clean of debris. I just think the biological is no issue, add a bunch of biomedia. The mechanical is so important that it is definitely worth going with a canister.

The backwash option on a small pond pump is amazing. Drain the tank for a water change while simultaneously cleaning the filter.
