Working on converting my 600g pool in the basement to a tropical one, normally I use this to house my koi in the winter but my RTC and TSN are going to be moving into this as soon as it's ready. Basement temps are in the 60's. So is it worth draining this ENTIRE thing (I've got koi in it right now) and putting insulation on the floor or is it a waste? Just checkin before I waste a weekend on this. :nilly:

Definatly worth it. The floor will act like a cooler for your pond. Just think about the SA that's exposed to the 60degree temp. When my old pond wasn't insulated I payed more a month in electricity heating it than I did for the pond

Definitely worth it. If you asked me for a good way to cool off your pond I'd suggest letting it touch the basement floor. Even a half-inch of styrofoam would be better than nothing. I'd probably go a little over an inch thick since it will crush when you fill the pond and you'll reduce it's insulating capacity a bit as it collapses.

Okay, looks like I'll be draining around 600 gallons of water this weekend :nilly: I have a lot of spare insulation, some styrofoam as well as fiberglass stuff, gonna have to catch the koi too and put them in some temporary housing for a couple hours.

Luckly I just asked a friend and they are willing to help out so everything should go smoothly. :)

Get 2" pink insulation the high density kind. It is worth the extra money for the increased r value. Also if you really want to cut down on heating cost build a lid out of the same 2" insulation
