my intake is normaly covered with alittle mesh to make sure the fish swim easily and safely well the power went out and the mesh slipped and fell to the bottom of the tank, so i restarted the filter without thinking to much of it and looked doen to see a small school of zebra danios (at leat they were only 99 cent fish, only used for cycling anyways) get sucked right up. (it was kind of funny to watch) well my blue rams got a fresh fish feeding. the pump really made some chum out of them. oh well it happens. i just made sure to clean it up with a water change after the rams were finished eating.

Healthy fish can swim away from the intake no problem. Your danios were probably sick due to them used for cycling
It really depends on the filter, with some of the people running 600gph filters on 55g tanks I can see it happening with fish that swam to close.
I like covering intakes with bags made from nylons if I am raising fry.
Mojo, I think most HOBs have the impellor before the media.

what i had found on my 35 gallon tank was the flow rate was way to high for the tank but what i did was i found a bigger suction end at one of the local pet stores

it was 2.5" to 3" long 1.5" wide and it had alot more opens in it so it ruduced the suction power at my fish never did get stuck after that was installed

my tank new filter has the same end now if you want measure your pipe for your intake and i can see if the diffuser can work for your application and i can get you a part number

i had a problem with this when i set up my baby silver aro pond i lost two babies to getting stuck to the intake of course it moves 1100gph but its also 3" in diameter so i had to section of the part of the tank with the intake away from the baby silvers but the danios and barbs never had a problem with the suction just there babies that they had actually it worked pretyy well to get the babies out without having to net them they all got sucked into my sump so now theres like 60 babies growing out in my sump
