Will be in Trinidad this's September and figured it will be possible to collect some wild fish during that trip.
It is originally where I'm from and I kept a nice number of locally caught fish as a kid. The obvious wild guppies and endlers, wild type Mollie, there were a couple type of Plecos, blue Acaras (massive ones that got up to 7-8 inches) a catfish species seldom seen in the trade. Not sure how many of them are still around but I would love to at least attempt to get some. While speaking to my friend he also reminded me there is a species of fresh water eel available that he recently caught and kept for some time. I totally forgot about them because they were hard to acclimate and often died from starvation after a while because we had no idea what they ate or how the fed.

What I'm really asking is for advice on what I should go about doing to get these fish back stateside. Any advice of keeping newly caught specimens, what type of equipment I should invest in, shipping tips, bags and other important products, will I need air pumps? Battery operated? Basically Everything. Emphasis on the permits needed here in the united states, I live in new York city. I was advised that I don't Need permits in Trinidad just have my USA paperwork together. I still find this weird but I was told by someone in the agricultural division of government. Also emphasis on bags alas I know catfish with their spines re hard to transport at times also.
I really appreciate any info. I also would be open to distributing the ones I don't keep.

In order to (legally) bring fish to the US, you'll need a couple of things:

1) Permission from the country of origin
2) USFWS Import/Export permit (for > a few fish)

I'm not familiar with Trinidad's law / process but check with them also on a fishing permit (to actually collect).

Thank you dogofwar
The difficulty I've been having is getting a straight answer in Trinidad on collecting.
For example I've had several different answers on what is required to take specimens out of the country.
Also what's the "magic" number that takes me from an average person to a business etc.
Will try few more calls
