I have been browsing aquabid looking for a good deal. I don't know much about them, but I'm trying to learn. Are any of the varieties more blue than other ones? Or more hardy? Any difference in growth rates or max size? Which one would recommend to a beginner at keeping african cichlids?

There are alot of variants of frontosas. If you don't feel comfortable yet then burundis are a good beginners choice. They would be the least expensive of the variants. The bluest and most expensive are the Zaire variants. The Tanzanian variants are moderately priced. They can grow up to 14" if the tank is big enough but it takes a pretty long time. There is a frontosa sticky where you can get all the info you need.
