interested in sand substrate

I have been seeing a lot of tanks with sand as a substrate and I really like the look of it. Are there any benefits or disadvantages to using sand? Also i would like to know if i can just buy cheap sand from home depot or do i need something specially made for aquariums.

the stuff at home depot is proly construction grade and hasnt been treated for use in a tank

If you go with sand from a home improvement center, make sure to get the playsand. It should be rinsed well before putting it into your aquarium.

I use pool filter sand that i purchased from a pool supply store. It was $8 for a 50 lb bag. Just make sure you rinse it well.
