i don't plan on keeping an oscar anytime soon but, what should be looked out for when buying a oscar from a lfs?

Also are f0 and f1 oscars easier to keep from disease due to stronger genes?

If all the oscars in the tank apear healthy how do you pick the most peaceful and less teritorial.

also besides going 90 gallons or larger per oscar what is the best rate and style of filtration for oscars?

and do oscars tear apart live plants?

What do they naturally prey apon in the wild?
If i ever get an oscar it will have its own tank for sure.

one major thing to look for in oscars at the store is to check their vent area, because a lot of them are either coming in with, or acquiring, camallanus these days. One possible reason is that in many stores employees will feed lots of feeder fish to them, but most probably get in like that from the supplier. Just keep an eye out for the little red threads

not sure about the F0 or F1 being easier as i have not kept them but Os in general are not very aggressive fish they are just hungry so as long as they are kept in a big enough tank and with fish too big to eat then you shouldnt have any problems, Oscars are however avid landscapers so any plants may not last long, your best bet with plants is to have them potted and put the whole little pot down into the substrate and then place heavy rocks ontop of their base to keep them from being uprooted and have the tank like this from when your O is very small so he accepts it as a part of his tank but even then there is no guarantee he wont shred the leaves, also an adult O would do fine in a 75g by itself of course bigger is always better but they could be very comfortable in a 75 by itself, and as far as picking the mildest one at the store i would just watch them for a little while most of them will be ignoring each other and swimming to you for food, pick one of these, any that are blatantly chasing their tankmates already stay far away from, and other than that just pick whichever you think is the cutest :)

Wow oscars really do not like plants.

its not really that they dont like them its that they like them to much, oscars are extremely playful there are even people that put ping pong balls in their tanks for them to play with, so they just like to play and redecorate anything that is in their tank i mean it is their home after all, which is cool for the oscars but sucks for us who are trying to keep their tank all nice and organized looking LMAO

So if an oscar is thoroughly entertained it is less likely to want to make plant confetii.

what is the heaviest thing a full grown oscar an push or pull around iam guessing somewhere in the 5 pound range.

yeah i guess i mean i think if its all been in there since it was little it would have better chances and i havent seen it personally as its been awhile since iv had oscars but there are reports of them even moving big stones and pieces of driftwood:WHOA:

I remember someone on here telling a story about their Oscar. He had put a plant attached to a piece of driftwood in the tank earlier in the day. That night he awoke to the sound of something being banged around. Turning all the lights on he noticed the Oscar with the plant in his mouth, thrashing the driftwood all around.
