I have a small school of common/comet goldfish, a common pleco, some rosy and bullhead minnows, and some weather loaches. I'm curious of cool fish I could introduce down the road when I upgrade another hundred gallons or so. I'm aware of chinese highfin sharks, but not any other large coolwater fish goldfish friendly.

Pleco's can't take 45 degree F and will probably pass outdoors. Orfe's work well with that group.

Not dropping down that low, 60 F is the coldest the tank hits in winter. I also use a smaller heater to heat the his usual hangout when it gets that low.

Orfe's are interesting, I'll keep them in mind down the road. Thanks!

Golden shiners

keep it native and you have your pick of anything legal for your country depending on tank size.

Most Cyprinella sps or golden shiners. Any of the nice tall-bodied, native minnows from Northern US-Southern Canada would work.

I keep the Uruguayan cichlids of the genus Gymnogeophagus, Crenicichla, and Australoheros with goldfish and koi in my ponds spring thru fall, and overwinter them inside, because my ponds freeze solid. For most of the day, their natural coloration makes them become virtually invisible outside.

In my experience only goldfish should be kept with goldfish and even then only like goldfish. Single tails with single tails and bifurcated tails with bifurcated tails. How about a different variety of goldfish? Dandyorandas.com had some black comets that looked like sharks up for auction last week. How bout something like that? It's really the only way to prevent anything bad from happening with your goldfish. Plecos can suck the eyes right out of a sleeping goldfish. A sick or weakened goldfish will quickly become food for other species in the tank.

Just my experience, best of luck
