For those into fishy paleontology or genetics, here's a recent article with a lot of good information on cichlid proliferation and genomic divergence over the ages.

Cichlids are a model for adaptive radiation, but the timing of their diversification is debated. Here the authors assemble 14 cichlid genomes, introduce a Bayesian approach to account for fossil-assignment uncertainty, and present a dated phylogenomic hypothesis of cichlid and teleost evolution.

Until very recently, I thought chromides were some kind of CA cichlid until I actually did some research on them.

3 specie in India, Etroplus maculatus (the orange chromide), Etroplus canarensus, and Etroplus suratensus (sometimes called the green chromide).
I have kept two, surantensus and canarensus, they seem to be closely aligned with the Paraetroplus of Madagascar.
The Etroplines, and Paretroplines have a separate type hearing apparatus than all other cichlid.

Canarensus above, a fairly small cichlid, and suratensus below.

The suratensus are one of my favorites that get as large as a dinner plate, and are heavily vegetarian.


Mine loved dandelions pulled daily from the yard.
