...Well I had an interesting talk with my girlfriends father today. Before you ask why I am talking about it in this forum, I will tell you that it is about fish!

My girlfriend is from Paraguay. She moved here when she was two and moved back to there a couple times in her life for just a few months at a time, but she baisically grew up here so she has like no accent or anything and doesnt know too much about the country. Especially the fish.

Her father on the other hand just moved into town and loves to fish. Even though he barely spoke english we had a long convo about the fish there. First off he pulled out his seine net that he used to catch fish down in Paraguay. It was a beast at 20 meters long. He wants me to take him some where to use it. Unfortunatly I dont think he understands that one that size is illegal to use here with out a commercial liscnese!

There were holes in it. I asked what they were from and hearing the word "piranha" being said the way it is suppose to be said will perk up any monster fish keepers ears! He said down there they were every where. All sizes too from small to big. Of course he said that he is not afraid of them.

I asked him his favorite fish. He said, "you know dorado?" I grinned and said yeah. He went on explaining how tough of a fight they are and also how good they are to eat. He asked if I knew where he could buy some to eat here. I told him the only ones you will find are for aquariums. Then he asked if they were big enough to eat! He loves his dorado!

The next fish he talked about was one that was kind of a nuisance. He said when you went dorado fishing sometimes you caught this too. The name translates to dogfish. Confused I asked him what he called it. The name was not in Spanish but in Guarine (spelling?) which is the native indian language. He said somthing that sounded like this...Par-eye-E-jah. Thinking payara, I started to describe it. I said long, skiny, silver....he finished with, "big teeth!" He told me how when you went dorado fishing people would catch them and hate it because as he said, they were too skinny to eat. Apparently fishing there is more for food then sport. He said that once hooked though the paraya would jump a meter in the air and thrash about.

We went on to talk about tigershovelnose cats and stingrays. He said he was more afraid of stingrays then piranhas. He also told me they got HUGE down there.

Damn I wanna go so bad!

Anyhow just thought I would share. It was really interesting talking to someone who grew up with these fish not thinking anything special about them. He was even more amazed at the prizes we were paying to keep this fish!
