I'm setting up a 55 gallon for a Delhezi. On the Delhezi I'm set, but since ive heard they're not too anti-social I thought I consider a possible tank-mate for him. Here are my criteria, I would like it to be a mid level swimmer since the bicher will spend most of its time on the bottom, not real aggreisve I dont want it attacking the Delhezi, and it needs to get big enough not to end up the Bichir's lunch in a year or so. Ive allready had african knife suggested. I would like it if there was a colorfull chiclid that fit those critera. I dont know chiclids real well as Ive allways been a keeper of preadatory chacarins.

i think those characins like raph, scomb, tat would work

There's a wide variety of cichlids that would work. Color, size, and shape vary a lot.

Aside from the most aggressive cichlids, or the ones that exceed 12" in length are out.

Oscars, severums, RDs (may get too aggressive), and so many more will work out just fine. Bichirs are relatively tough fish, and most cichlids that aren't spawning typically ignore bottom dwelling fish.

Please note my experience is predominantly with new world cichlids and with a myriad of polys and other bottom dwelling fish.

having seen a senegal with half of its face missing because of an oscar I'd be a little wary of that combo myself. That said it can work in the right conditions (meaning with a chill, friendly oscar).

I'd say severum for sure. Beautiful fish, and I know several people on here have the combo with no problems. I'd do it myself, but I want to try and stick to a biotope tank. Good luck

Gold saum/silver saum, archers, angelfish, are some of the things that have worked for me and wouldn't outgrow a 55g.
