In a dream
Ok so during the summer i picked up 4 ocells from my LFS. Unfortunately 2 didnt make it. I ended up getting more cichlas from but this time from Snookn. My good friend wanted some cichlas so i gave him the bigger ocell from the LFS and kept the runt.

Its been over 2 months since its been in his tank and its amazing to see how the ocell looks. Here is the difference between his ocell and mine..both from the same batch.

This is his at about 6"-7"......

Im curious to know why they look so different?

Would our different set ups make a difference?

As far as the lighting goes, he has a coralife T8 10k......i have T5 10k/colormax combo. He has gravel and i have sand. He has slate and i have manzanita wood. His cichla is with cichlids.....mine is with other cichlas.

I know each fish from the same batch can look different but im just wondering if different set ups can make that much of a difference?

His cichla is colorful all the time but im just impressed with the spangling it has. To me it looks really unique but just so weird that both of them look so different. I wish the other 2 didnt die so i could see how they would have turned out.

Fish from the same batch can look very different especially when u purchase farmies/mutts from your lfs and not a vendor on here. I had 2 farmies and they looked very different one had a lot more spangling like an occel and the other looked like a peru mono.

agreed i had the same thing happen

I agree. It's really not unusual for fish from the same batch to look different. In the top picture, the fish seems stressed from something, possibly the camera. The markings may not show up as much when relaxed as stressed on younger fish.

Ok i see what you guys are saying. My friends ocell might have been on high alert in that pic. But that fish always looks like that and always blazing its colors and i personally think it looks awesome.

I also bought 4 baby speckled ocells and kept 3 and gave him 1. My 3 in my tank look all similar to each other yet his looks different in his tank. At first we thought it was the lighting. But i really am starting to think that they look so different because of their surroundings in the tank. I was just thinking about it one day and wondering what other people had to say about it.
