That is interesting I had no idea.
 
They have been introduced in central and even South America. Naturally I think they really are native to as south as Texas. Maybe some of Mexico.

That "range" has to show the introduced range. Definitely a bad invasive here in Oregon. Looking at the historical range it is much, much less than that picture.

"North America: St. Lawrence - Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins; Atlantic drainages from North Carolina to Florida and to northern Mexico. The species has been introduced widely as a game fish and is now cosmopolitan. Several countries report adverse ecological impact after introduction."
