I recently tried spray liner for a black background and it started peeling, so that was a fail. Now I am looking for new ideas and opinions. I have seen a lot of possibilities, but none I am sold on yet. The tank has a blue painted on background that I don't want to remove so it has to go in the tank and preferably be dark and 1/2" thick or less. Background dimensions are 33"x48" and I would like it large enough and flexible enough to get away with 1 piece. Most of it is covered by rockwork.

Some ideas:

Black outdoor synthetic turf carpet

Black Malta media

Black shade cloth

Black landscape fabric

Doubled up black screen

The glass coated with black silicone and some black sand

Any ideas on what would give some dark texture and not break down?

Any of the above sound decent?

is there a reason you don't want to remove the blue background? it seems as if it would be a lot more trouble to make an interior background than to just scrape off the blue and paint it black on the outside.

The way the factory painted on the blue background it is really on there with layer of blue and then silver backing. The sides took about 4 hours each and a dozen razor blades to remove the blue. Underneath the frames would still be the blue paint showing through into the tank. For the back I would have to drain and move tank and then the PVC drains/returns which are glued and plumbed flush against the back. All of which I would like to avoid.

what i did on my 75 gallon a while back, i had a piece of 1/8" plexi that i cut the same size as the back of the tank, it was two pieces so it was easier to remove, rough it up with sandpaper and coat it with silicone and pour on black gravel, or black sand would work, that way if you don't like it later you can remove it easlily. edit..black krylon fusion paint also works on plexy, but it takes 7 days to fully cure before safe in the tank, and it should last atleast a couple years.

why not go get some silicone and buy a small pond liner that is balck and trim it to fit ?

Thanks for the ideas.

When I got home from work I was thinking of what could work as I looked down into the pond to feed the fish and thought duuhhh...

So a couple hours later I have a temp background.
