Internal overflow box

So I recently got a 125 gallon tank with an internal overflow box. I caped the box thinking I would never use it but I wanted to see if I can turn that box into a internal filter somehow?

Any particular reason why you wouldn't use the existing internal overflow to house the drains? Is there a better alternative that you're thinking to do? That would be my first choice if it already existed and all in working order.

It's because my current stand can't support a tank underneath. It is only 12" wide.
