Internal Overflow vs External

Why would you want internal? Its bulky, in the way, ugly. Why doesn't everyone get external overflows? I'm a noob, and have only used hobs and canisters so I really don't know. Please explain.

HOB overflows don't allow you to put the tank close to the wall. Depending on the design, some external overflows add more bulk inside a tank then a well designed internal. Not to mention the bulk added to what is coming out of the top of the tank with externals.

True, but I'm thinking of the externals that are built into the tank, not cheap hang on overflows.

I'm pretty sure if it's built in the tank then that would make it a internal overflow and not a external.

You can have an overflow built onto the back of the tank with a cut in the back wall for water to flow into the overflow

i wish i had an external built into the tank it woud be a nice lil refugedium

one of my larger tanks has an external overflow..it takes no room up in the tank and i like it! i had to custom order it that way though..i think most shelf item tanks will have internal overflows.
