after returning my 10" male jack to his tank a few weeks ago, after his summer inthe pond i am just now realizing he has some internal parasites(white stringy poo) and for sure has effected everyone else!! whats thw best way to eliminate?? some way to soak food?? thanks

i had same problem with my male festea and i caught it to late. killed it. it also infected my jag so i treated with jungle parisites away. he had a lump on his head with a white ball and i treated the tank twice to be on the safe side and now hes as good as new. i got it from big als online. i always use jungle

Definitely treat the entire tank using a product called "Jungle Parasite Clear" (JPC). You can get it at most LFS as well as Walmart, and it comes in a tablet form (I think the term they use is "Jungle Tabs"). It contains metronidazole which is the active ingredient, and praziquantal which is another anti-parasite med. Another thing that is imperative (according to the fish veterinarian at my school) is to dissolve a JPC tablet in a small cup of water and soak the fish food in it, and here's why...

The JPC in the tank is unlikely to help the fish eliminate intestinal parasites, but it will kill the flagella that are shed in the feces. (The shed flagella are what makes other fish contract the parasites). In order to combat the parasites within the affected animals' GI tract, they must ingest the metronidazole. So soak your food for at least 5 minutes then feed. You need to feed them the soaked food for at least 5 days-- do not stop before then even if you see the feces improve. The metronidazole does make the food unpalatable so you can add something like Garlic Guard to make the fish more interested in it.

Another thing: before using JPC on the tank, vacuum your gravel really well to pick up any infested poo that is there. Then start with your Jungle Tabs.

Good luck!!!

My green terror is too far gone for this.

she won't even eat food anymore, so I can't feed any medicated stuff.

treating the tank though is almost useless from everything I have read. If it is the white stringy poop, I tried everything. I had a discus with the same problem and Jack Wattley swears by the fresh garlic like someone who is afraid of vampires.

Another person I hear that from is an angelfish breeder. He told me about the fresh garlic. It sort of follows the same idea that it goes the the digestive system.

"But it HAS to be fresh," he said, "If it ain't fresh then you're just spinnin' wheels."

Garlic is a great thing for fish but not always a sure-cure for parasites. I've used PraziPro for gill flukes with no fatalities and no harm done to my anubias or fancy plecos. Aquarium salt is great for some parasites as long as you don't have any fish in the tank with a sensativity to it. One word of caution about the Prazi: some people have a severe allergic reaction to it.

I'm sorry to hear about your GT. It's very unfortunate that medicine can't help all cases. Garlic is a good substitute if you can get it to work, but metronidazole is your best bet.

Have you tried adding aquarium salt to your tank, or giving your Green Terror salt baths every day? These will help her feel better in general and perhaps enough to try eating again. I wish you the best of luck... it really sucks to lose a fish.

Edit: Oops, thatonegirl beat me to it!

I havn't tried salt baths. I never heard of that. I should have posted this on here!!!

I always use aquarium salt to treat different things, but I never thought it would work for this.

thanks though, I will add some more salt to my tank now as I don't have a free tank to give a salt bath to (if its anythign similar to a freshwater bath for saltwater fish).

good luck labiatus on your jack though (sorry for derailing the thread!)

I concur with the metronidazole soaked food.

You can try garlic, but it's a pretty mild antimicrobial. Ginger as well.

thanks for the help, i started the tabs last night bas well as soaked food, big jack did take some pellets and krill
