one of my gouramis has a pot belly so to speak. its not getting bigger like a pregnant fish does and i can see no sack or pocket in the belly. but i have never seen a pregnant gourami before so i wouldn't know what one looks like. its spherical almost perfectly round. im wondering if i have internal problems with this fish

What kind of gourami? how big? Pics?

Gouramis are Antibandtoids, related to bettas. They're egglayers and don't get pregnant.

Females develop a huge belly when they're full of eggs. You probably have a female full of eggs.

Do you feed the same food all the time?? If cheese were the staple of your diet with little fiber you'd have trouble with a bowel movement. Fish need a varying diet also for similar reasons. If you think the problem may be constipation give the tank frozen bloodworms or smashed greenbeans alternately for a couple of days.

Green peas are also a gentle laxative for fish.
Gouramis do get large when holding eggs but unless they get some greens constipation is not uncommon. here is a pic o some dwarf gouramis about to spawn from http://images.google.com/imgres?img...es?q=breeding+gourami&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&sa=N
A drop or 2 of cod liver oil put into the fishes mouthwith an eye dropper also works as a laxative.
Other than that it could have a bacterial infection in the bowels, a laxative often gets rid of it but some times it needs antibiotics.
The other common cause of swollen gut is worms though they often show external signs, Jungle's antiparasite food should work if that is the problem as will a mix of Praziquantel and Metronidazol.

it was worms.......they broke through her skin and one was sticking out. (dont worry this happened in a little quarentine tank) she didn't die but i put her out of her misery. after last nite i knew she wasn't pregnant cause her left side got huge and here right side stayed large. but the pic above was nothing compared to how big she was. im treatin my water incase anybody has anything.

side note i feed them tetramin pro tropical crisps 2 times a day. every third dayi substitute a feeding for 2 small cubes of frozen brine shrimp. also when i put in my algae wafers for my plecos they nibble on that too. i sometimes even catch them nibbling on the zucchini for my plecos but not that often. is this sufficient for diversity they require?

It should be although I am not fond of frozen brineshrimp, they rupture in freezing so when they thaw not much is left of them except shells and juice.

Or just use mashed canned peas.
