Couple of weeks ago we had a huge post on fish evolution versus fish creation, while I was arguing for the evolution side someone pointed out my flaw when looking at religion.

Dacox and redtailfool pointed out that religious people and the Church do not take the Bible in a literal sense. Bunch of questions arose from that point that I can not find the answers to.

1. Did people take the Bible in a literal at some point in history or was it context and metaphorical interpretation since day 1?

2. In that case where do you draw the line between what they take literal and what is metaphorical? Is Adam and Eve, Noah’s arch, Earth existing for only 6000, etc.. real or …?

I keep looking on various websites and various books without much luck, and I am scared to go ask a priest for obvious reasons…

Just ask a priest. He wont get mad. He might even explain it better than the most of us. I to did that once. I asked a stupid question and answered in a nice way though.

Don't ask a priest, go to another denomination.

ewurm has a point, it really depends which denomination you discuss it with.
Some still take it literally even at this point.

Perfect topic for a fish forum. What's next... politics and abortion? Find other avenues to deal with these topics on a face-to-face basis. Cuz subjects like this one debated over the internet...well'

You will need to decide for yourself, I think that you will find that the answer is maybe. Parts of the bible are history, others are allegory and based on older works such as talmudic lore or even zorastan legends.
Different groups have taken part or even all of bible literally or not at any particular time including today so there is no real right answer to your question.
Fortunately this is a topic that does not need to be argued as each person can find the truth that leads their own soul closest to what they need to believe, after all, we will all find out the truth in the end, in the mean time just do the best you can.
