Would a pool filter like the one posted below be usable as a mechanical filter? (My ammonia is fine-therefore I dont feel the need for more biofiltration-but the cf-300 that I have does not have a high enough flow rate to keep my 55gal clear)
My main concerns are, whether the gph is right for a tank this size (55gal). I have not found that yet, and whether it would leach anything harmful.
Just thought I would mention, there is also a larger version for 1,000gal pools.

Would this be feasible or foolish? I am short on cash and if this would work I would be thrilled due to the low pricetag :D

Foolish. They cant even keep particles out of my intex pool for actual swimming, and nothing is constantly crapping in it. They also clog with almost nothing in them, there is severe bypass of the cartridge, they are expensive to replace and only last for a few weeks and fall apart if you hose them down more than a few times, and good luck finding replacements in the colder months. Very, very bad filters.

If you looking for cheap, look up the filters people make that utilize filter socks, filter sock housings, and an inline pump. Much better.

Well I read of some of the problems that that particular filter has(the impeller is positioned so as to allow water to bypass the filter.). So I found a filter of similar filter of similar flow rate (500-600 ish). My family has one of the Intex filters on our pool. The one that we have does not have the bypass issues that the smaller ones have and it keeps the pool crystal clear (which is where I got the idea of using it). I do have to agree however on the point you made about it clogging readily. Every few day it stops up. But that is on a pool several times larger than my tank and it is outside so i dont think that clogging will be nearly as big of an issue. Our filter cartridges have been washed out several times with the hose and are still in tact (though discolored).

This is the filter I have found without the bypass problem(the one similar to the one in the previous link, not the one we use on the pool)

Also, if i were to get the 1,000 gph filter, would that be too much flow for jack dempseys? I have one and a few Africans which I will probably get rid of later on when the JD gets big.

lipadj46, where can I find that filter, or its equivalent, for $80? No where have I seen such a decent price for one. I'm pretty sure that the aquatop equivalent is the cf-500 (correct me if I am wrong) which doesn't sell for under $100.
