I am in the planning stages of building a pond in my basement for when my fish get too big for my tanks. I plan on starting in the fall, and have already started buying some things like filter media. My plan was an 8x4x3 made of stacked landscaping timbers with plywood and a 45 mil Firestone liner inside.

I was looking around today for a new intex pool, as my families intex finally gave in last year after 5 years of heavy use. I saw a 10 foot diameter by 30 inch depth metal frame intex on sale near me for about $90. I figured that I could easily use one of these for a fraction of the cost of building a pond myself.

The thing is, I have read a few threads here about a possible algaecide coating on the pool liner than can have negative effects on fish. I saw one thread where it was being debated, but it ended with no clear answer either way. I have seen people use them, but how safe is it too do so? Has anyone used one long term with no negative effects on their fish?

Thanks for any info/advice.

use a liner, still a cheap and easy frame

Yeah that crossed my mind, but I was still curious about using it without one. I know that bigrich545 used one for all the catfish he rescued without a liner, so maybe he'll chime in with his experience.

I looked into this a while back, from everything I read it seemed to suggest that the liner on the intex pools is fish safe. If your worried you could always get a second liner just in case.

I'll be setting up my own pool shortly, different brand though so I will be doing some tests with feeders first.

He may not see this thread. You are better off pming him. I am curious to the answer as well though.

I am going to send him a pm, thanks. I'm pretty sure he still has his up. He's probably busy setting up that 4000 gallon he's got.

Forget the pool, I want his tank.:D

Why not call Intex and ask them if they use algeaside coating?

I would, but it may not be an algaecide that is what was rumored to be causing the problems. Somebody else called a while back and never got a straight answer.

I basically thought people on here will know if their pools are fish safe better than intex does.

That's my guess as well. Like I said, My family has been using these pools for their intended purpose for a long time. They are durable, portable, and cheap. All very good qualities. But If you've ever seen one set up in the sun and you don't clean it every other day, you would think that there is no way there can be an algaecide on the liner.

If I do go this route without an additional liner, which will all depend on $ at the time of purchase, I will certainly subject some goldies to the liner test first. Better that than all my catfish. I also really like the blue sides and blue/white bottom colors on the pool liners as well.
