I currently have an eleven inch silver arowana, but he may soon have another arowana tank mate, Im not totally sure what kind yet, but it will most likely be a black or another silver. What are some good techniques on introducing the new one? My Silver seems like a pretty docile fellow, but I was wondering if anyone has any good tips or tricks on adding a new one to the tank.
Thanks all

Make sure you have another tank available. There is about a 50% that it will not work.

I went with the 3 not 2 rule. I got a black and a silver not to long ago and added both of them with my Jardini in a 180 gallon. Not only was the other two arowana his new tankmates but I also introduced 2 spotted gars. I now see the Jardini doesn't really mind the two arowana so getting the gar was kind of a waste.....that is just my experience though.

Yep second tank on standby or at least a divider.

I strongly recommend a divider to let them acclimate with each other. Leave them there for about a week or two before trying to mix them together. Like what others have said, this is a 50/50 situation, but ive done it in the past with success. Have a spare tank on ready just in case the start squaring off.

Another idea was also mentioned above, and that is to have a total of 3 or more arowanas. They will still nip each other, but it wont be as bad.

Good Luck!

It is not always obvious when the nipping is serious or not. When i mixed jar with three silvers, jar was being chased around but no mouth contact just head nudging. Jar retreats (silvers don't follow) - no harm no foul and no lost scales nor broken fins.

I mixed three asian aros with another green (resident one) aro, and the resident aro was chasing all of them all over the the tank. Resident one is much smaller than the new comers some more!!! The resident was moved out cos it was actually snapping at the new comers fins and tail as well as continiously chasing the new ones across the big tank^^

So, divider and/or new tank is a must ^^

PS: personally, i have never seen an aro kill another aro, but i would not risk it - think plan B always

1) Change the decoration in the tank right before you introduce the new one, to make the tank look different to the one that has been in there
2) Keep the light off when you introduce them, and keep the light off for a week
3) If you notice they fight when you turn the light, turn the light off again for 2-3 days.
Best is to have 3 in the tank, but with silver, two could work. Make sure they're same size

:iagree: It took me half a year to get my two silvers to live peacefully together.
