Total loss:

two spixi snails:(
one carnival crab:cry:
all 6 of my bee shrimp:swear: (expensive!)
two cherry shrimp:(
one amano:(
one and only kuhlie loach (not an invert, I know, but included anyways)

These deaths occured after I did a water change on my tanks Saturday. The crab was in my brackish, the loach and one spixi was in the 75 and the rest were in the discus tank.

I changed about 25% of the water in each and cleaned the gravel at the same time. I did nothing different, so I don't know what happened.

I want to replace the bee shrimp and snails, but I'm afraid to! The remaining shrimp, snails, and crabs are OK so far. I put Chemi-Pure in all the filters just to be safe. I also stopped doseing all ferts on my plant tanks until I'm sure things are stable.

I've tested for copper (none showed on the kit), and all other parameters, but nothing is showing out of wack.

What the heck could have happened and could I safely replace the dead shrimp and snails now?

maybe your water conditioner was expired? was it old?

did water temp. and ph match up when you did your water change?

did you "gas out" your incoming water as it entered your tank?

My bottle of Prime is only two weeks old, as are my test kits (did a spring cleaning on all reagents and water treatments.)

Water temp was probably a few degrees off, but it always has been, I'm a touch tester;) As for PH, don't know. I don't test all my tanks for PH, only the discus and my reef tank (un-affected because I use distilled water for changes) The discus tank is 6.5, and that is what comes out of my tap.

I always "bounce" the water off a decoration or the tank side when filling. In the discus tank I run and airstone during the change because the tank is deep. Also, the filters are running and that water "crashes" down into the tank because of the lower water level, KWIM?

Bottom line, everything I did before the deaths was the same way I've done things for years.

The first thing that pops into mind is you forgot to dechlor

I remember using the Prime. I know for sure I did on the discus tank at least, because my son ran off with cap-less bottle while I was measuring out the dose. I had to chase him down before I could fill the other tanks with water.

Just wanted to add:

None of my fish (other than the loach) seem to have been affected by whatever killed the inverts. My convicts have fry right now, wouldn't they have died too, or at least acted wierd? And my discus, he did turn dark and hid under my sword plant for the rest of the afternoon, but he came out for dinner and was looking fine next morning.

Yeah, if it was chlorine or chloramine it would have killed fish as well. Any local work being done on the city water? Maybe iron poisoning, just a guess.
