a friend of mine just started a 20 gallon salt water tank. it was his first time starting on salt, he had always had freshwater stuff.

anyway, he wants to put a few gobies in it but he'd also like some inverts, crabs, shrimp, etc.

do these two normally get along or should he forget it?

gobies and most all inverts that i can think of anyways do very well together. with a 20gallon though he'll want to keep his stock rather light.

A very common group is a watchman goby and pistol shrimp combo. They share a very nice relationship in the wild, and in captivity.

other good choises would be sexy shrimp (anemone shrimp), peppermint, skunk and emporer shrimp, as well as coral banded shrimp and camel shrimp. Theres a ton to chose from. Most gobies stay rather small so there shouldnt be any issues finding a few for a 20 gallon.

I would go with a goby and pistol shrimp as sweetang said. not all species do it, but it's really awesome to watch.

Yellow watchman and a Tiger pistol shrimp (?) correct me if i'm wrong for the shrimp.

I think most if not all goby's can be in a 20 gallon, sweets got the shrimps covered pretty well.

gobies, some inverts, crabs, shrimp

with these five works you liste like 30,000 species

does he know (more specifically) what he's looking for

They should get along just fine some shrimp gobies will even form a symbiotic relationship with some pistol shrimp.
