Our 55 gal tank contained a school of serpae tetras, two albino cory cats, a (lonely) bala shark and (wait for it!) our albino tiger oscar, The Sheriff. (This was a temporary setup for The Sheriff.)
My husband was dying for a pleco, and we'd heard some good things about a local fish store, so we paid a visit one day and I let him pick his fish out. He doesn't do his research sometimes, and being new to plecos he chose a very sick fish. It was put directly into the tank without even thinking this fish might be a silent killer.
The next morning, all of our fish are floating (except the oscar). It was terrible. We went back to the store only to have them tell us they have a 24 hour return policy and we were basically screwed. Had we invested in a quarantine tank, our original tank would still be around, sucks we had to learn the hard way.

--How that hodge-podge of different fish got together is a different story.

Im only 18 and ive learned many many lessons the hard way on fish keeping and really just general life. Learn and do or do not reapeat

I'm confused.
Sooo.. how exactly did a sick pleco kill everything in less than 24 hours? How had this oscar not eaten every one of those fish yet? What killed them??
I have never seen a disease wipe out a tank in a day from introduction, methinks the un-QT pleco was not the issue here..

My memory is probably playing tricks on me, it could've taken a couple days. The pleco had a disgusting fungus. All the other fish had it when they were taken out.

And the other fish were mature, and the Oscar was introduced as a juvenile (probably an inch and a half long when we got him) so they had a working relationship of sorts. We moved him when the other fish became mouth-sized to him.

I've been keeping fish for 30+ years. I have seen a diseased pleco wipe out a tank very quickly. Catfish (especially wild caught ones) are notorious disease carriers. Unless you get fish from a reliable fish keeper, always quarantine new fish before adding them to your tank.
