I think that these things can turn invisible. I have a 6-7" peacock eel (last time it was spotted [no pun intended]) in with a few tank mates: 4" Firemouth, 4" EBJD, two Ctenopoma's 3.5 & 4.5", and maybe two kuhli loaches (Also MIA) for the better part of a year now.

On a rare occasion I might see it's beak sticking out of the sand or gravel. I can see where the Kuhli's could have been eaten, but not the eel. I have not seen it in over a month. I took apart the filter, emptyed all ornament during W/C's. It is not on the floor by the tank. Where oh where can my peacock eel be?

Have you tried thoroughly running your hands through the substrate? If it isn't in the filter, the substrate, or swimming around in the water, I think the only other place it could be is in your other fish's stomachs. :(

Or maybe you just have a mutant fish that can turn invisible when it wants to.:grinno:

I had one like that, I took everything out of the tank, changed the filter, and then put my fingers to the bottom of the tank on one side, pulled them all the way across and didn't see him at all. Had no idea where mine went, but shows up every now and then. Ended up getting rid of him cause I never saw him, person I traded him to says he sits on their driftwood and hangs out all the time.

Thats why I don't keep them anymore. Had a dedicated eel tank once, was completely barren. They lived for years, never saw em. Even during cleanings. I could see them going through the gravel, but that was it.

well they are good at hiding I have had mine for like 3 weeks and two days ago he decided that he wants to be social and today he started eating from my hand and he sticks his head out of the rocks to beg for food. try and find the nose of your eel and start lowering worms by hand he should become a costumed to it eventually he should eat from your hand good luck Eeliot is my first eel and I love him very cute and fun to feed good luck with your eel.

yes, eels hide in the substate ALOT! eventually it will get pretty big and probably get out of the gravel. but getting it to eat from your hand would be a good idea.

my eel isn't hiding in the substrate anymore even when I changed up the tank I tought I had scared him. woot hes fun to watch swim in an out of cracks. it takes a while trying to hand feed your eel by sticking your body in the tank but its rewarding again good luck

o yeah and I have mine with a psycho Dempsey so I dont think its your ebjd. hand feeding is the only way to get food to your eel with out your other fish getting the food

my tt eel would disappear under my UG filter in my old 55 for months, thats why i removed it and just added pvc piping for him to stay in

lol its funny hearing these stories. i just bought my first eel, a peacock, and i was for sure that my gar ate him, but i ran my fingers thru some gravel and eventually found him. hey, does anyone know anything about eels and bichers?
