I've had my rainbows 48 hrs now. first day they were very active and mooching about the tank. but today apart from popping up for air I've hardy seen them at all. to the point that I've moved stuff in the tank to make sure they were still in it!!! is this normal for new juveniles?

I would not worry that is normal behavior. The activity at first is them in a bit of a panic looking for a way out of the strange place they just fell into lol. They will hide from u a bit as they settle in , they'll be active at night/ when your not looking as they explore the new home but will come around fast. Resist the urge to go digging for them, they are masters at hiding and messing around in the tank stresses them out makeing them hide even more. Even long term captives hate if you mess around with tank decore.

Food is the best way to bring them around, their greed will quickly overcome their fear and they quickly stop seeing u as a threat and will be begging at the glass for food any time you walk buy.

If u can get meal worms they love them. Every snakehead I own goes nuts for them. My bleheri will eat them right from my hand, they even jump clean out of the water to snatch them from my fingers. Not only do they love them but it's also a healthy food source especially if u let the meal worns fill up on veggies before feeding. Meal worms are also incredibly easy to breed for cheap healthy food source.

cheers DC. i thought as much with them being in a new environment etc. ill look into the mealworms tomorrow. dried or live? I've gave them a shrip tonight n they came out then. little ****ers. you ever fed them on maggots? got a fishing shop right by me i could get them from no problem. gonna ask them about the mealworms tomorrow

I use live meal worms, i've never tried dried. Maggots should be fine, mine eat any insect offered.

could you post a full tank shot ?
Normally freshly introduced channa are shy, but soon they start to conquer the tank

god knows what I've done here but its uploading upside down. ffs

I've just added duck weed to try n give them cover and darken it down a bit

add ten times more wood as you have now ! This tank my look nice, but its not a snakehead tank yet !
Go out in the woods and collect brown oak leaves, younger trees often keep the brown leaves over the wintertime, so you can be sure no one has peed on them and trow some handsfull into the tank, the fish will love it !

+1 to Brucki's post, duckweed will help but more driftwood for hides and Brown Oak Leaves are a great addition. I collect and dry a garbage bag or two full every year and use them in my tanks for leaf litter.

i like the oak leaves idea, would other leaves be ok? i have a walnut tree?
