for the last 9mo that i've worked at deathco i've kept IR sharks out of our tanks, even going so far as to remove the tag for them and the planogram sticker so nobody else would order them. however to my horror i came into work to find half a dozen adorable little babies swimming around one of the tanks there is nobody in town that can house these guys. my plan is to buy up at least 3 of them, probably all 6 if i can, and talk to whomever ordered them and try to get them to never do it again, this will prevent them from going to some idiot w/ a kid that thinks they're cute and will try to put them in a 10g for life. i'll house them in my 20L until they hit about 3~3 1/2" and then put them into my 180g until i can adopt them out. so is there anybody in the sac area that can house some IR sharks and would like some? these guys are my fav. cat but i know i can't properly house them for life but at the same time i know that if i don't get them then some moron with a 10g is going to. i just went back in today and saw that there were only 4 remaining in the tank, luckily they're mislabled as syno cats so they're selling for 8.49 instead of the usual 2 or 3 bucks which should make it a bit longer before the others get sold, the down side though is that we've got the carnival in town so we're having a rush of idiots with goldfish wanting to buy tiny tanks and looking for tank mates.

thanks, i think i'll be willing to drive within 100 miles.

100 miles! :WHOA: That's a lot of driving-sure your willing to do something like that?

You shouldn't have too much of a problem finding them a good, permanent home even within a 50 mile radius.:) G/L

Why don't you speak to your store manager about them? Or, call and speak to your regional manager ... unfortunately if you purchase them they will just show up as inventory that SOLD and will eventually be re-ordered.

If they fail to stop ordering them, perhaps they will let you alter the planogram/signage, or conduct a Saturday morning tutorial on keeping large fish successfully. Your managers may be morons, but generally they just love when employees show aptitude combined with passion and drive (keeping in mind most manager bonuses are linked to sales!). And such activity would look very good on future resumes, whilst truly educating some about the hazards of purchasing cute baby monsters. :)

I hate to ask but what is a IR shark, I did a search and can't find what they look like.

I am in the east bay

the general manager is an incompetent moron who is clueless. i've talked to the highest ranking assistant manager and a few of the employees, recieved little sympathy but i don't think they'll be ordered again if i find out who did the order, everybody i talked to agreed that it would be extremely difficult to house them. our ordering is all done by hand, i did it for 4~5mo before they pulled my out of aquatics for no reason :swear: the order sheet gives the top 134(iirc) best selling fish for the nation and our is never accurate, i could sell a dozen ghost shrimp a week and the paper would show 2 of them sold in 4wks, or that we have 300+ neons in stock when we've got 5 in the tank, fish usually don't show up sold for a while, if they ever do.

already altered the planogram and signage, i don't remember if i threw out the sign for the sharks but i pulled the planogram sticker off the tank, the only record of them being in our planogram is going to be on the order sheet and the online planogram, neither of which i can alter however i don't think anybody goes off either. i doubt they will let me do a tutorial, nobody there really cares much about the fish and everything i put in it would be against petco recommendations.

try looking for iridescent sharks, beautiful catfish that are active, diurnal and just all around everything one could want in a catfish but with one major downside, they get 4' long.

IRs get 4' long! I didnt know they get that big. very cool. Unfortunately im bordering on overstocked as it is so I cant help you out. After I move I will be upgrading tanks though, so if you end up holding onto them for awhile I will be able to buy/take one or two later this year.

4' is pretty big, usually they top out a bit smaller but they definitly have the potential for 4'. you'll have to have a pretty massive tank, i do want these guys to be housed for life. and yea i was planning on holding on to them for awhile while waiting for them to grow out, i just don't want to pick them up and get stuck with a bunch of monster cats because i'll be moving in a little over a year and won't be able to take them with me and it will be a couple more years before i could properly house them.
