That's what everyone say (=

I have been thinking about adding 1 more piranha, however it's only a 34 gallon tank.

yep, it's a good move,
but your piranha must be feeling damn boring there without any friends

No way, not a chance. Way too small of a tank for 2 rbp's at that size. Keep him solo. Trust me, he isn't bored. No stress to deal with in terms of aggression issues and no fighting for food.

I've got a solo red belly myself in a 29 gallon right now. He will be moved to a 55 here in a few months. Most people think you have to have red bellies in a shoal but that's far from the truth.

Many rbp have been kept fine solo, they just don't display shoaling behavior but are still very aggressive and cool!

Definitely no harm in keeping it alone, some people will say its not natural but nor is keeping them in a glass box. IMO like I kind of said above solos wont display some of their natural behavior!

If you are looking at 2 they better be a proven breeding pair! When it comes to large adults a 75gal is almost needed but you may slide with a smaller 18" deep tank.

As for multiple piranhas at least an odd number of 3 is recommended. From research and results, it seems to be best suited as 3-5-7 etc but 3 is an iffy number too cuz that leaves an odd man out. So if you want more then 1 I would suggest 5 and either a 75-125gal or bigger depending on size.

I have kept 6 teens (4-5") in a 55 for as few weeks with adequate filtration and man when I drained and cleaned that tank it was disgusting. I then added them to my 90gal where they were good for awhile but the dominant one of the group was seriously "skitzo" (didn't want to shoal or didnt play well with others) so I gave him to a friend and cut the group down to 5 and it was very stable. About 5 months later they were moved to a 125gal which I then added 1 more piranha of similar size and interestingly enough I've had random moments of pretty bad aggression (small bites or slashes, relative skiddish-ness) but I might attribute that to a possible pairing and or territory dispute.

My point is it still kinda proves the "evens number theory" is correct or at least ime keeping 6 seems to have an aggressive effect.

Also on another note it is a pain in the ass to move piranhas especially a shoal, so choose your upgrades wisely! I think saving up for a 75-90-110 or 120-125gal would be a good idea but easier said then done! I find randomly picking up small pieces of the puzzle to a bigger tank makes saving up more efficient/realistic! Just wait till a cheap 75-125 pops up on classifieds or CL for example, and a good canister filter or sump so over a given period of time you complete the puzzle to have a nice Large Shoal tank where they can swim and spawn!

Believe me RBP aren't going anywhere!

yep,. 34 gal is not enough for 2.
that's why I said maybe it will work.
But in my opinion I don't recommend any 1 to keep a solo fish (especially if they are schooling fish) or wild caught fish in a smaller tank.

If you have only 1 RBP in a tank, you can't see many of their natural behaviors.....
And the fish won't feel happy as well.

Dimming the lights is good for piranhas, their eyes don't dilate like peoples do. If you want to go darker to see if his activity increases, I use a led stripe that's a little bigger than 1/3 the tank and put it in the middle of the tank. Making the sides of the tank darker and dimmer I think helps so they don't crash into the side of the glass. I've also used reptile lights work too, their dim as well. I've kept reds in a group and solo, it's all opinion. If it was me, I would pick up a 55 or60 and get 2 more and use the 30 for something that's normally solo like a Mac or spilo. I love my rhom but he would need a bigger tank later on down the road. But like I said it's all opinion, who am I to tell you right from wrong.

Just to correct a post above RBP do not fight eachother for food, one takes a bite leaves then another gets a turn. Almost like they make sure everyone gets some before taking seconds.

Now incompatible groups like blacks and reds may fight for food but certainly not a shoal of pygos.
