So I just set up a new 55 gallon with an iron stand. I was going to put a 30 gallon underneath it since they are both 12" wide. Turns out it won't fit because the bottom section is on the inside of the legs. If the entire aquarium isn't supported can I still put it on the bottom of the stand?

No. All four corners need to be supported at the least.

But you can rectify that by putting 2x4 boards across the bottom. That's what I do with my sumps if they go underneath an iron stand.

So as long as I have something supporting the entire tank I can have the front end sticking off the stand approx 1-2 inches?

If it's gonna be hanging off the front, just stick a thick piece of plywood under there that also hangs off the front a couple of inches and stick two short upright pieces of 2x4 underneath the wood under the 2 front corners of the tank for bracing.

The tank you're putting under there isn't big enough to really have issues with as long as you have some support fairly evenly along the bottom of the frame, and bracing to fully support the front corners.

I originally thought you meant you were switching to a smaller tank because the 30g didn't fit, so the bottom tank would only be supported by two middle braces, but not the corners. (that's how my 40b stand is built, which is why I have 2x4s sitting across the bottom frame lengthwise for the sump).
