Fish on the ugly side, pretty side empty.

They have the babies on this side.

And the babies get sucked over to this side. No, it's not amazing, but it's the first time I've ever used sand as a substrate and planted a plant or five. Better than the radioactive blue gravel.

Parents get no respect these days I guess.

A pump in the right tank pushes water into the left tank. It then returns through the siphon. The pump is in a big frame wrapped in mesh so the fry can't get through and be killed or sent back. It also doubles as mechanical filtration.

Don't worry too much about the aquascaping, if you don't get it right the first time (which not many people do) then keep at it and soon enough you'll learn what works as good as it looks, and what doesn't... At least that's how i learned at least, all about trial and error with a lot of research...

There's technically no irony. It's actually more like tragedy. But since most people don't understand the definition of irony, I've used it in the more common incorrect way which is akin to 'gently absurd' or 'imbalanced'. You see, I put more work into the side that houses no fish. Typically one would work harder to accommodate the fish and let the refugium side be ugly. While this is my first attempt at planting and it's plenty ugly, it's not as bad as the sparsely littered blue gravel. That's the tragedy. That the living creatures get the ugly side while their tank is connected to a tank that's more like their home than the one they are in.

I'm thinking about moving the ghost shrimp over there, but I'm afraid he'll eat my planaria before they establish themselves in the sand bed.

Cool...I'd like to do something like this with my convicts, but I think splitting the parents into a 10gal portion of my 20 and letting them look at their fry through the glass would just cause problems:p

Cool setup though, keep at it with the aquascaping, I haven't even begun to attempt it yet:nilly:

Yeah, I'm keeping my eye out for classy but affordable decor like black slate and nice rocks. There's some crazy plant that was turning into a lawn in the tank I got it from. Hopefully I can train that out into a lawn in my own tanks. But that also means better substrate. *sigh*

Apparently my brain has turned to mush, I saw "Irony" and thought you were going to show a fish that looked like Iron Man.
