ok i decided to go to san antonio with some friends, and i had my family take care of my fish.. all i said was to keep the door to the room shut, only open it to feed each tank with 1 block of blood worms and then shut the door.. and thats it for three days.

i come home today.. find two very cloudy tanks.. fish food covering up almost all the gravel, two fish missing, two fish dead.. and i found out my lights for the tanks were on for three straight days.

supposedly they were fine till this morning.. someone fed them i guess half the thing of fish food.. and did that in all my tanks. it was cichlid flakes.. getting fed to neons and guppies.. and oscars.. i dont even feed them that!

so big dramatical long story short... im still pissed, and i dont trust anybody anymore:nilly:

your better off letting them go hungry for a bit, I learned the hard way too this summer.
GL with the rest of your fishkeeping though.

Three days isn't long enough to need someone to feed your fish.

We only need someone to do it if we're gone for a week or more. Luckily my mother in law is skimpy on the food though, so we have no worries about something like this happening.

Yeah, I would be pissed too :irked:

wow.
what happened to you is totally different from me.
when i went to canada for a holiday,
i came back to find my fish a few inches bigger.
in a mth!

ouch. had a similar thing happen to me. my mate (he may as well be family) decided he was going to feed my fish while i was on holiday. fair enough. he didnt tell me that he had been on the internet and found out that fruit was good for certain fish, and was gonna feed them with a plum... came home to a tank full of milk, 2 dead parrots, and 3 dead tinfoil barbs.

the only thing that survived was an oscar. which he then killed 6months later when he fed it a fire belly newt... i was not amused.

my fish are safe now though. i have his silver dollars in my tank, as long as they live, my fish live. :)

i just came back from 4 days out of town, and had my brother feed my fish, that went well, but apparently one of the fish was killed by others in the tank and corpse wasn't removed :(

That really sucks!

As said above, for up to a week I just leave the lights off (light from window is enough) and do not feed. All but maybe fry should make that no problem.

If you need to feed, leave prepacked baggies of food, and still go light. Hide everything else!

When a babysitter is watching my kids, I hide all the food so she doesn't get any ideas...

Burt:)

when im gone for the weekends ( at grandpas ) noone even goes in my room or feeds or touchs my tank except at nite when my uncle just turns offf the tank light

That sucks! I had a similar situation years ago. I went on a family vacation and my parents told my cousin to feed the fish and check on the house once in awhile. I guess he didn't want to make too many trips so he basically tossed in half the bag of Koi food in the pond. Came home to find a really bad smelling pond with 3 dead Koi and 4 gasping for air. The Catfish were perfectly fine. But I wasn't too happy.

Should have put this in lessons learned.Even at 2 weeks adult fish would be better off with no food than fed by someone who doesnt know fish.Only if you have young fry do you need to do something. If you need to let someone feed your fish, premeasured portions, hide all the extra food. And tell them repeatedly NO EXTRA FOOD! even if you say it so many times they get pissed off and back out you are better off
