here in the UK i have seen an advert for Wels Catfish for sale @ 8". they are currently in a 5ft tank and are only £30 each!

the advertiser states "they are 8" but will get much bigger! great for your pond!"

Wels Catfish grow to goliath sizes and imo are not suitable for your average garden pond lol

Do you think this is responsible advertising?
What are your thoughts on adverts such as this?

i think that it should state the actual size they get r that wouls be irresponsible kinda like what petsmart does with pacus do over here
LOL

seem like responsible but confusing!! this guy seem like out of space for them but don't want to sell them to the wrong hands!

My LFS had one once, and had the environment agency come round to put it down. It is irresponsible, as they can survive our climate and will disrupt the natural ecology of our freshwater systems. We don't want an ecological crisis like that of the snakehead in the US.

I've seen that advert on aq-classifieds, its madness... They can swallow a dog! A fish best left for the wild in my opinion, like the Arapaima.

all advertising is irresponsable imo lol. Like xenia said about petsmart on their fish cards that say pagnesious catfish only get like 16" and only need a 75g tank.. or whatever they say.

I used to sell wels catfish in Germany to people who had large ponds with a goldfish problem. We are talking 20 000 gal and upwards though. I'd sell smaller growing predators for smaller ponds. The wels was present in local waterways already so there was no risk of changing the local species balance. Not sure if this bloke differentiates with pond size that much though.

Funny story though... one of my work collegues back then went fishing for wels catfish in Spain. upon releasing one he'd caught (about 6 foot long) he put his head under water to watch it swim off and it turned around and bit him on the nose. :WHOA:

Pissed myself laughing for about 10 minutes when I heard that. What kept me going so long though was my collegue standing in front of me with a bandage across his face

At least they stated a pond.

Imagine some dumb kid thought it can be kept in an aquarium and brought 1 for his 10g tank..
